Yoshiko Uchida was a writer of children's books. The Uchida Papers contain manuscripts, correspondence and material relating to her literary career. The collection contains materials on fourteen of her books. The majority of Uchida's papers concern Japan, specifically Japanese folktales and children's stories. The correspondence in this collection primarily concerns Uchida's editor and fan mail from school children. Yoshiko Uchida was born in Alameda, California in 1921. She was an educator, secretary, and author of acclaimed children's books that deal with the Japanese-American experience and are noted for their elaborate plots and fleshed-out characters. She taught schoolchildren when she and her family were interned in Utah during World War II and later she worked as a secretary in order to have time to do her writing after work. She died in 1992.
